Mongol Rally
Final Update from Paul Brown PDF Print E-mail
Written by Ingrid Pope

Firstly apologies for the lack of contact other the rally, it was very difficult to find fast internet points, the trip was a great success so far we have raised over 4000 pounds for charity plus donating the car "Mongol Sally" to a local charity in Mongolia.

we would love to raise 5000 pounds in total for charity, if you were unable to donate before we left, please send me a personal message via facebook

It took us 27 days to complete the rally, the rally is not race however we were the 13th car to cross the finish line, out of 500 cars we were very happy with our position!

In total we drove 8545 miles from Lands End to the Mongolian capitol Ulan Bator driving through France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Czech Rep, Poland, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and finally Mongolia.

Driving through Europe was quite simple, easy and regular road signs, well tarmac roads and petrol stations that accepted credit cards.

As soon we hit Ukraine Russia the roads we very poor, lots of potholes and a lack of sign posts!

How ever from Kazakhstan to Mongolia the real fun started, we had a total lack of roads, a lot was off road driving, average speed at times was 20 mph. Petrol stations sometimes did not have your type of fuel plus it was always annoying that you had to guess the amount fuel you needed to fill up your tank and paid up it up front!

The average day of the rally would consist of waking up with the sun, 6am cooking breakfast, washing, checking the car over and then packing away camp, we then would keep driving through the day until we hit our target for the day, if the roads were kind on a good day we would set up camp 30mins before the sun went down (normally a 12- 15hr day of driving), on bad days we drove through nights rotating drivers! (15 – 35hours of driving periods) In the evening we would set up camp, cook a simple pasta dish for us and any convoying cars, (being an chef, I used to trade cooked meals for locals beer and people to do my dishes!) after cooking every night we would make a camp fire, drink beers and catch up on the daily rally gossip.

Personally highlights of the trips were meeting all the interesting people on the trip!

In Kazakhstan, a local man was so angry about the film “Borat” it was his mission to show me the real Kaz a tell the world how untrue the film was! He serviced our car for free and introduced us to his family and friends, which was something special!

In Kyrgyzstan a local family invited us in to there Yurt for Lunch, lunch was mutton kebabs with ever rally-iers nightmare the dreaded Mares milk (horse or goats milk fermented) I had to down a pint of this horrible drink in front of their family, I had to leave to be sick but they loved my effort!

Mongol Sally reached Ulan Bator in a bad way, her rear suspension had gone, the rear right bearings were on the last legs, there was a hole in the exhaust plus there was 4 cracks in the wind screen, we strongly believe if the rally was another 500 miles the rear wheels would have fallen off!

Hopefully over the next couple of days we will add all of our photos and videos to facebook.

Many Thanks Mongol Sally – Paul and Robert

I have now uploaded the photographs sent by the Penzance Pirates on the Mongol Rally, there are some amazing images of this epic journey.

It was an amazing trip, traveling through 15 countries covering 8550 miles of driving across all sorts of terrain, to reach the finish line was a great feeling, the trip was a lot more challenging than we expected! On average we were driving 12 - 24 hours a day without the essentials - showers and toilets.

Camping every night was great fun and reminded me of my youth! - Camp fires, sleeping under the stars and cooking with new friends, this is something that I will look to do more in the future when back home.

Our diet was living off local foods and Red Bull style energy drinks, the weirdest thing about local food as we got close to Mongolia, some of the local dishes looked and tasted like Cornish pasties!

Highlights of the Adventure
Drinking Mares Milk with a local family in Kyrgystan Mountains,
Total off road "rally style" driving through the Mongolia Gobi Desert
Sleeping under the stars in Ubekistan
Having a hot shower after arriving at the finish line.

How that the rally has finished, the car (Mongol Sally) has been given to a local charity to be used as a service vehicle, Robert plans to fly back London while I will travel back via the trans Siberian train.

Day Sixteen

Bishek - Almaty
Easiest drive of the rally! We had an early border crossing, where we were both tired and drove into the car of a Customs Officer! - luckily we did not do any major damage, but the accident did cause a hour of drama!!!

In the afternoon we spent the whole day as tourists visiting the next Winter Olympics ice ring stadium and doing all the usual tourist stuff...

Day Seventeen

Almaty - Camping Kaz
Hard day driving 500kms drive on very slow roads!

Highlight of the day was meeting some new Mongol Ralliers to drive with; across three cars there was one Dutch, one Irish, two Romanian, two Kiwis, an Austrian and a Russian girl.

Day Eighteen

North Kaz - Russian Border
Another endurance drive - 700km in 20 hours! No highlights; just a sore arse!
10,000 miles gives you piles!

Day Nineteen
Woke up in SIBERIA (Russia) with a 900 km drive to MONGOLIA ahead. However, the roads are on a par with England

Day Twenty
we finally reach the Mongolia Border....... It was an awesome feeling to finally get here after weeks of driving and sleepness nights however then we got put into Mongolian customs ............ to be continued !

Now over 20 hours stuck at the Mongolian border due to the rally organisers not pre paying the entrance fee's.

The border is a mountain crossing at 3000 meters with a wind chill of -18.
We have 4 hrs until the border closes for the weekend.

Spirits high.. for the moment.

CURRENT PROBLEMS TRAVELLING ACROSS MONGOLIA AND REACHING THE FINISH LINE !

FUEL - The plan is a day drive through Siberia, stock up on petrol, a full tank 35 liters plus two 25liter jerry cans a total of 85 Liters of fuel
The car is doing 12 km to a liter so hopefully we can get 1000 kms out of fuel, with the view to buy another tank of fuel of local people!!! To cover the extra 300kms

Its a 1300km drive from the border to Ulaanbaatar, there will be no ROADS or SIGN POSTS .....

TIME - we need to get to Ulaan Baatar before 4pm Wednesday the 12th of August giving me chance to get a Russia visa to get the trans siberia train and get back to work in time.

WEATHER - It has been a very cold Winter in central asia and currently it is raining very hard! - meaning all the rivers will be deep! ( Remember there are NO bridges in Mongolia.) Its the largest rainfall they have had for this time of the year! Currently we are experiancing mental heavy Thunder and lighnting stores!

TERRAINE -

The first half of the country will be heavy Mountain terraine passing mountains above 4000m abovre sea level. The second part will be travelling through the gobi desert. One of the harshest landscapes on the planet.

THE BORDER CROSSING -

Currently reports are coming in that there is some major problems between the Mongol Rally and the Mongol Authorities. At the moment cars are taking 24hours to cross the border.

CAR - Rear shocks on Suspension totally gone,
Front Windscreen now has four cracks!
Tyres are currently bald, however we have 3 spare wheels ready for a change.

IF OR WHEN WE GET TO THE FINISH THE PLAN

Paul needs to get another visa for Russia quickly ( it normally takes 4days however i think i will need to bribe them to get it done in 48 hrs )to get the 4 day train on the 16th to moscow and fly back to London on 23rd

On the 15th of August - we have the offical finish line party!

Robert is flying back to England on the 17th to relax before he starts work again.

The drop Sally off for the charity!!! - it will be sad!
